Golf in Ayrshire, the Birthplace of the Open

Ayrshire is considered to be one of the best golf destinations in the world. And with nearly 50 courses in Ayrshire alone, it’s not surprising. Ayrshire is home to five of the UK’s top 100 courses and three Open Championship venues. Choose from links golf courses, parkland or an island course!

Links courses

The Ayrshire coast from West Kilbride in the north down to Girvan in the south is one of the world’s most glorious stretches of links golf courses. At over 45 miles, this stretch of coastal land is home to over a dozen of the most well respected, challenging and varied golf courses in the world. Three Open Championship Golf courses can be found here with old links layouts that include pot bunkers, fast greens with burns winding through them. New championship courses and high quality public courses together create a continuous stretch of golfing coastline that is completely unique and draws people from all over the world to play here.

Parkland courses

Although Scotland is famous for its links courses by the sea, there are plenty of other incredible courses to be played in Ayrshire catering for all budgets and ability levels. Play championship standard golf at affordable prices at some of Scotland’s finest parkland clubs.

Trump Turnberry

Located among some of Scotland’s most dramatic coastline and under the gaze of the iconic lighthouse, Trump Turnberrry is a world-famous golf course and not just because of who owns it! Both courses – the Ailsa and King Robert the Bruce are on every golfer’s bucket list. The Ailsa course became world-renowned after hosting Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson’s legendary ‘Duel in the Sun’ at the 1977 Open Championship. The Open has been hosted here three times since. The course is just an hour and a half from Glasgow and the resort includes the newly renovated spa hotel which received the Scottish Hotel of the Year accolade in 2018.

Royal Troon

Founded over 140 years ago, it is a world-famous course and has hosted the Open Championship no less than nine times.

Western Gailes

Another historic course Western Gailes was founded in 1897 and has a reputation as one of the most challenging links courses in Scotland.

This is a majestic course designed by Kyle Phillips, creator of Kingsbarns Golf Links as unveiled in 20015. It has been widely hailed as the finest links course and has hosted the 2017 Scottish Open.
